This album is a compilation of some of the Mighty Sparrow's earliest recordings, made in Trinidad. Most date from around 1956–57, and originated from several sources: a four-song EP on the Balisier label titled Calypsoes by the Mighty Sparrow (whose cover is used for this album); a various artists compilation on Balisier titled Calypso Madness; and two Cook Records various artists compilations.

All of these songs are the early definitive recorded versions of these songs. Sparrow later re-recorded "Sailor Man," "Trinidad Carnival," "Carnival Boycott" and "No, Doctor, No."

"Picong Duel" features a duet with Sparrow's longtime friend Lord Melody, with whom he had a longtime, affectionate musical "feud." This song, along with "No, Doctor, No" and "Attempt is as Good as the Act" were recorded live.
